CVS

CVS (Concurrent Version System) is a network-aware version control system for collaborative project development. CVS is currently the most widely used version-control system for open-source projects. Version control allows developers to share their code, to track changes, and to maintain a cohesive log of all changes made and when the changes were made. Sourceforge provides CVS access as a part of every Sourceforge project.

While CVS was originally based on RCS, it is now entirely independent of RCS.

The GNU project has an alternative version system called Arch?. The most likely successor to CVS now seems to be Subversion?. Let us mention Meta-CVS as well, a Common Lisp layer on top of CVS.
